At B&N Publishers, we work with authors, and authors trust us with their words before they trust us with anything else. That trust doesn’t stop at the manuscript — it extends to your name, your email, your phone number, and everything else you hand over when you reach out to us. So before you fill out a form or send us your first draft, here’s exactly what happens to your information once it lands in our inbox.
When you contact us through the website, request a quote, or sign up for one of our services, we typically end up with:
We don’t ask for anything we don’t need. If a form field feels intrusive, it’s probably because it helps our editors or publishing consultants understand your project better, not because we’re building a profile on you.
Honestly, most of it comes down to being able to do our job. We need your email to send you a quote. We need to know your manuscript’s condition to assign the right editor. We need billing details to process payment once you’ve agreed to work with us. A smaller portion of the data — the browsing analytics — helps us understand which pages on the site are actually useful and which ones people skip past.
We do not sell your information. Not to marketers, not to data brokers, not to anyone. If that ever changes for any part of our business, we’ll update this page and make it obvious, not bury it in fine print.
Your project details are shared internally with the team actually working on your book — editors, designers, proofreaders, whoever’s assigned. Beyond that, we occasionally work with third-party tools for things like email delivery, payment processing, and website analytics (think services like Google Analytics or a payment gateway). These providers only get what they need to do their specific job, and they’re bound by their own privacy obligations.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect our rights, our authors, or the public — though in practice, this has never come up.
Like most websites, ours uses cookies to remember basic preferences and understand traffic patterns. You can disable cookies through your browser settings any time. Doing so might make parts of the site behave a little clunkier, but it won’t stop you from reaching out to us.
This deserves its own section because it matters so much to us: submitting your manuscript for review does not transfer any ownership or copyright to B&N Publishers. We see your work to evaluate it, edit it, or format it — never to claim it. Your intellectual property rights remain entirely with you, in full, always.
We hold onto client and project data for as long as it’s reasonably useful — during an active project, and for a period after in case you come back for another book or need records for tax or legal reasons. If you’d like your information removed sooner, just ask. Email us and we’ll take care of it, usually within a few business days.
You can ask us at any point to:
Our services are meant for adults working on publishing projects. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If we find out we have, we’ll delete it.
Every so often we’ll update this page — new tools, new regulations, growing business, that kind of thing. When we do, we’ll change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll make an effort to flag it more visibly, not just quietly edit the page.
